Oakdale estate on Connetquot River lists for $2.5 million

A 7,613-square-foot Beaux-Arts-style estate in Oakdale across from the Connetquot River feels, to listing agent Lowell Ackerman, "almost never-ending."

The five-bed, 4½-bath home is located on Shore Drive and listed for $2.5 million. Annual taxes on the 1.1-acre property, which falls within the Connetquot Central School District, total $40,268.

"It's such a grand scale home," said Ackerman, who has co-listed the property with Joseph LaViola, Kelly DiJorio and Julia Sirianni for Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty. "It just has so many living rooms — formal living rooms, informal living rooms."

The home's grandeur is consistent with its position in the neighborhood, known locally as Idle Hour for its proximity to the former estate of William Kissam Vanderbilt I. Among exterior details are a stucco facade and mahogany doors.

"When you walk in, you have that double-heighted entry foyer with those huge columns," LaViola said. "That just gives it a very grand, stately look from the moment you walk in the house."

Light enters a formal living room by way of a curved wall of windows. The home has multiple fireplaces, as well as a Renato pizza oven. An area used as a breakfast nook features a mural that depicts a gondola amid peach-toned buildings.

"It just gives a little bit of character to that area and it just kind of breaks up this little space from the rest of the house," LaViola said.

Warmed by natural gas, forced air and radiant heat, the estate is cooled by central air conditioning. An enclosed screened-in porch off the kitchen and a second-floor wrap-around balcony offer outdoor access. The second floor is accessible by elevator or staircase.
